The new Smyrna Motlow Community College 83,000 square-foot third building facility will be named in honor of the late Mayor Bob Spivey. The Smyrna mayor was instrumental helping to facilitate the Smyrna Motlow College Campus.
“Mayor Bob Spivey saw the need and had the vision for bringing a quality community college to Smyrna and helped to make it happen. I can recall touring the McMinnville, Tennessee TCAT construction site with Bob and and he received a phone call from the former Tennessee Governor Phil Bredeson. Bob shared with me the growing need for a college in Smyrna. Bob Spivey was a true visionary,” said Tennessee State Representative Mike Sparks (R-Smyrna).
The Tennessee Board of Regents (TBR) recently announced its annual Regents’ Award for Excellence in Philanthropy and Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Philanthropy.
Nominated by Motlow State Community College, the Town of Smyrna was named as one of four Regent’s Award winners; and Dr. Sam H. Ingram, Motlow’s first president, was named among the 13 Chancellor’s Award winners.
TBR created the two awards to recognize outstanding accomplishments in fundraising—honoring individuals, companies, and organizations who go above and beyond to donate their resources, finances, and personal time to TBR colleges.
Regents Award for Excellence: Town of Smyrna
The Regents Award for Excellence in Philanthropy is for visionaries, statespersons of the community, employer and workforce partners, and regional leaders.
“The Town of Smyrna has been instrumental in supporting Motlow State Community College and higher education for nearly twenty years,” said Motlow President Dr. Michael Torrence.
The Town, along with the late Mayor Bob Spivey, paved the way for Motlow to have a dedicated Rutherford County location. Recognizing the value of higher education, Smyrna donated 14.34 acres for the first campus building in that area, which is approximately 17,500 square feet and was named in honor of Dr. Arthur L. Walker, Jr., the College’s fourth president. The building opened in 2006 and was filled to capacity in the first year.
